The Five Pillars of Player Development
Our development model is built around five interconnected pillars that guide every program we offer. Rather than viewing training as individual clinics, we’ve created a complete athlete development pathway that allows girls to continually build their confidence, skills, and love of the game.
SKATE
Build the Foundation
Great hockey begins with exceptional skating.
Athletes develop balance, edge control, stride mechanics, speed, agility, power, and efficient movement patterns that create the foundation for every aspect of the game.
SKILL
Build Technical Excellence
Technical confidence creates game confidence.
Players refine puck control, passing, shooting, scoring techniques, puck protection, body positioning, contact readiness, and position-specific skills that prepare them to perform under game pressure.
THINK
Build Hockey IQ
The smartest players make the game look easy.
Athletes develop decision-making, positioning, spatial awareness, offensive and defensive reads, communication, and team concepts—learning to understand the game rather than simply complete drills.
COMPETE
Perform Under Pressure
Development only matters when it translates into game situations.
Through battle drills, small-area games, team concepts, spring development, and competitive experiences, athletes learn how to apply their skating, skills, and hockey intelligence with confidence and resilience.
LEAD
Build Character Beyond the Game
The best players become great teammates and leaders.
Our leadership pillar focuses on confidence, accountability, resilience, communication, sportsmanship, and personal growth. We help girls become positive role models both on and off the ice while preparing them for success in hockey and in life.
A Complete Girls Hockey Development Pathway
Every Paramount Ice × Alpha Girls Hockey program supports one or more of our Five Development Pillars, allowing families to clearly understand how each session contributes to their daughter’s long-term growth.
Rather than isolated training sessions, our programs work together to create a complete, progressive development system that builds stronger skaters, smarter players, confident competitors, and future leaders.

About Samantha Burton
Samantha coaches and volunteers within the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association’s high-performance pathway and contributes to athlete development as a dedicated skills coach within U SPORTS. She specializes in youth athletic development, high-performance athlete training, performance enhancement, corrective exercise and sports nutrition, allowing her to bring a comprehensive and athlete-centred approach to both on-ice development and overall performance.
As a program architect, coach and mother of two female hockey players, Samantha understands both the opportunities and challenges girls experience throughout their hockey journeys. She founded Alpha Girls Hockey to create the kind of girls-first environment she wished had been available during her own development; one where female athletes receive high-quality coaching, meaningful support and the confidence to pursue their potential.
Through Paramount Ice × Alpha Girls Hockey, Samantha leads the development of comprehensive girls-only programming for athletes ranging from foundational development to elite preparation. Her holistic development model is built around five core pillars; Skate, Skill, Think, Compete and Lead, ensuring athletes develop strong technical abilities, greater hockey intelligence, confidence under pressure and the leadership skills required to succeed.
Samantha is committed to creating positive, challenging and supportive environments where every athlete feels seen, valued and inspired. Her goal is not only to develop stronger hockey players, but also to help build confident, resilient young women who are prepared to lead both on and off the ice.
